Now That Our Hearts Have Caught Up

A flag and a headline have taught us so much.

So now
We find the words,
The heart,
The empathy.

To know the meaning of childhood,
What it means for someone’s life to be turned upside down

What it means to lose family members and a home
Many, millions, multiple, mothers, mercy

So now
What do we learn about ourselves?
When do we choose to call a spade a spade?
When do we hide from pain and feel shame?

When wounds are open,

What do we learn about our skin
What lies within
The depth of suffering

Those whose eyes are closed still
May well be closed forever

But then again,

How do we begin to understand what a life is worth when it is enslaved in a dark-skinned body? Perhaps the soul should have chosen a better home.

What value could there be to a location that exists below the equator? As we know, there are parts of the galaxy that could never sustain human life.

So step in with your empire and mow yourselves down in war
Shed blood like you were put on the earth to do
Ruin lives like it fills your pocket and sit back, laugh

After all,

Some bodies make no sound when they hit the ground.
Some graves are destined to be empty.
And some things will have no eyes left behind to shed tears for them.
Some dreams aren’t real, because they come from a hollow two-third human.
